Waste segregation and spill first response

Keep waste streams identifiable and prevent an untrained clean-up from spreading harm.

01 / prepare

Before you start

  • Display the site waste-stream map and approved containers.
  • Keep spill response contacts, safety data sheets and trained responders identified.
  • Confirm applicable local permits, waste rules and authorised vendor routes.

02 / execute

Procedure

  1. 01

    Identify safely

From a safe position, identify material, label and immediate exposure risk; do not touch unknown substance.

  2. 02

    Protect people

Warn others, isolate area and call the site responder; evacuate if the plan requires it.

  3. 03

    Prevent spread

Only trained staff use the appropriate kit and PPE under the site procedure; protect drains if safe and authorised.

  4. 04

    Segregate waste

Put clean-up materials and normal waste into the correct labelled containers; avoid incompatible mixing.

  5. 05

    Record transfer

Log quantity, source, container, storage point and authorised vendor handover as applicable.

  6. 06

    Review cause

Record incident, environmental impact assessment, clean-up evidence and prevention action.

03 / exception control

Stop and escalate when

  • Unknown, large, flammable or hazardous release: isolate and call trained responders.
  • Do not wash material to a drain or improvise a chemical neutralisation.
  • Do not classify regulated waste without competent review of current local rules.

04 / verify

Ready-to-use checklist

Mark each item Pass, Fail or N/A in the downloaded CSV. Record evidence and assign a corrective action for every failure.

  • Material identified or marked unknown
  • People and area protected
  • Responder notified
  • Drain/secondary containment considered
  • Only trained personnel cleaned spill
  • Waste container and label correct
  • Transfer/incident evidence logged
  • Corrective action assigned

05 / evidence

Keep these records

Spill report, SDS reference, waste register, vendor manifest and action closure as applicable.
