What does Bin location mean?
A bin location is the exact address where stock is stored inside a warehouse.
The exact field names and approval steps vary by warehouse. Use your site procedure when applying the idea.
A practical warehouse example
A picker is sent to A-03-02-B. This means aisle A, bay 03, level 02, position B in this warehouse’s naming scheme. The worker scans the location label, then confirms the SKU and quantity before removing stock.
The location tells you where the stock is; the SKU tells you what it is. One SKU can be held in more than one bin, subject to the site’s storage rules.
How to apply it
- Agree one address format
Define the order of aisle, bay, level and position in a simple site map.
- Label both sides consistently
Put the physical label where it can be read safely and match it to the system code.
- Check every movement
Record putaway, replenishment and pick movements against the correct location.
Common mistake
“Rack 3” or “near dispatch” is not a complete location address. Ambiguous locations turn a stock record into a search exercise.
Check your understanding
If the system says 12 units are in A-03-02-B but the bin is empty, should you simply pick from a nearby bin?
Show the answer
No. Follow the exception procedure: verify the address and transactions, locate approved alternate stock and record the discrepancy.
One check to perform at work
Select one bin and confirm the physical label, system location, stored SKU and quantity agree. Record any discrepancy instead of silently moving it.
